The duty of artists is the outrageous paths of fantasy, surprise, and independence. ("Le devoir des artistes doit être d'indigner les chemins de la fantaisie, de la surprise, de l'indépendance") Ettore Sottsass. Designer of the 1980s, popular since the start of the Italian design movement, Ettore Sottsass, leader of the movement named Memphis, knew how to be a true creator: architect by training, and designer playing with the production of furniture, lamps, and ceramics, he also touched on silverwork, daring to be avant-garde. His masterpiece is the one presented here: the fruit basket "Murmansk", consisting of a tray resting on 6 zig-zqg cylinders, composée d’un plateau reposant sur 6 cylindres en zig-zag, thumbing its nose at industrial production. Useful object and/or work of art, halfway between the two, such is the great contradiction of Memphis, but also its originality. Brigitte Fitoussi, Memphis, Assouline, Paris, 1998.
